The CEMC Seminar in Computer Science for Young Women is a unique opportunity designed to ignite enthusiasm for computer science in interested grade 9 and 10 female students from across Canada. The young women invited learn that computer science is about much more than using and programming computers. Through lectures, labs and hands-on activities, the seminar explores the foundations and applications of computer science that have a profound effect on the world today. Lectures, labs and hands-on activities typically investigate ideas demonstrating the breadth of Computer Science. This might include introductions to cryptography, bioinformatics, Internet search engines, graphics, human-computer interaction and hardware. Learning with Laptops

Bishop Carroll High School and the Calgary Catholic School District invite parents and students to an information evening about the Learning with Laptops Program for September 2010 on Wednesday, June 2 at 7:00 pm. Incoming students for the 2010-2011 school year, along with current Grade 10 & 11 students, are eligible to purchase a Cardinal Red Toshiba T210 laptop that will be fully supported at Bishop Carroll High School. There is an easy monthly payment plan and information and contract forms will be available at this presentation.

The main office is also selling raffle tickets for $5.00 for a chance to win one of these Toshiba T210 laptops. Tickets will be on sale at the information evening with the draw being made at this session as well. Hope to see you there!

Nicolas Methot

Bishop Carroll High School is proud to announce that Nicolas Methot is one of 5 recipients of the Colonel Douglas H. Gunter Award (formerly the Canadian War Museum History Awards) from the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. This award is open annually to all senior students in Canada who plan on graduating from secondary school in the spring of that year. To qualify, each student must submit an original work using one of the following media: Text, Visual Art, Web Design, Audio or Video Production.

Every year, the Canadian War Museum selects a theme on which students must base their work. For 2010, students were to produce a work on the theme of peace. Nicolas wrote a 2000 word creative work of fiction about a soldier returning from Afghanistan. His story was one of over 100 submissions and was selected as one of 5 national winners of a $1000 scholarship. In addition to receiving a monetary award, Nicolas will have his name appear on a special display inside the Canadian War Museum and have his story posted on the Museum’s Web site at http://www.warmuseum.ca/cwm/home

The Canadian War Museum is dedicated to the study of Canadian military history and the effects of war upon Canada and its people. The Museum also recognizes the need to assist students who plan to continue their studies in the field of history. The Colonel Douglas H. Gunter History Awards have been instituted to support and encourage these students. Congratulations Nicolas!

Liz is also a member of the 2009/2010 Junior National Team in Women’s Kayak. She is one of 4 junior female athletes who have been selected to compete in two international competitions in Szolnok, Hungary, June 5, 6 and Bochum, Germany, June 18-20. Liz will also compete at the 2010 Lake Placid International Regatta, July 2, 3. Congratulations to both these athletes!
