The Wonderful World of Viruses Virtual Conference

The Wonderful World of Viruses Video Conference

On October 20, 2009 the Science Department at Bishop Carroll High School sponsored a Video Conference called The Wonderful World of Viruses. The VC enabled students to be directly linked through a live video and audio link to a virologist at the University of Alberta. The event details are provided below:

The Wonderful World of Viruses

Viruses are all around us.  They’re the most abundant ‘life forms’ in our oceans, and they’re probably all over that mouse you’re using to browse the web.  Viruses are exceptionally clever ‘germs,’ and they’ve learned to hijack the bodies of every other living thing on the planet:  they infect the plants in your garden, the bacteria in your yogurt, and the pet dog you call Fido.  And chances are, they’re hiding out inside of you right now.  Although most viruses don’t make us sick, we’ve all been infected with at least one that does.  In fact, the viruses that call us home have changed the course of history, and they will continue to affect the way live, probably forever.  Let’s take a trip through the wonderful world of viruses that we inhabit and learn a little bit more about these fascinating creatures.

Logan Banadyga

In 2001, Logan left small town Saskatchewan for the University of Alberta wanting to cultivate his nascent fascination with all things microbial and infectious.  It wasn’t very long, however, until he discovered Immunology–the yin to microbiology’s yang–and he completed an honours BSc degree in Immunology and Infection in 2005.  After undergrad, Logan decided to pursue a PhD in virology not out of a sadistic desire for inconvenient work hours and surplus stress but, instead, out of a desire to understand how viruses interact with their host’s immune system.

Senior Boys Volleyball vs. Bishop Grandin

Senior Boys Volleyball Defeat Bishop Grandin 3 - 0

The Cardinals continue to have a busy fall with weekend tournaments and regular league play. The Senior Boys Volleyball hold an enviable 5 – 0 record and remain at the top of the Division 1 standings for Calgary High School Volleyball. This past weekend on October 17, 2009, the boys captured first place at the Bishop Grandin Tournament.

The Junior Boys Volleyball team captured 2nd place at the E.P. Scarlett tournament this past weekend and are 3 – 2 in regular season play. The Girls Cardinal Volleyball teams continue to work hard in their seasonal games although struggling in early season league play.

Hard to believe but the Girls Soccer team are ALREADY in playoffs defending their Division 1 Championship from one year ago. The ladies played their first leg of the journey defeating Henry Wisewood handily 6 – 1 on a cold drizzly Monday, October 19, 2009. The team entered the playoffs with an undefeated season of 5 – 0.

The Cardinals Cross Country team sent 3 representatives to Provincials held on Saturday, October  17th in Wetaskiwin. Congratulations to Katie, Christianne and Curran for their outstanding efforts this year in representing Bishop Carroll. The Cross Country team finished 5th in the Calgary City Finals.

The Gridiron Cardinals struggled with turnovers in the 2nd quarter of their game vs. Ernest Manning on Monday, October 19th (rescheduled from Friday). The errors sealed their fate and the Football team fell to a 3 – 3 record; still playing 500 ball.

Please support your athletic teams by attending their games. Volleyball plays on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Football is back on the field on Friday, October 23rd and Girls Soccer is on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 4:30 pm.
